Michael Spencer has played a pioneering role in the field of social and environmental standard setting and labelling. He is the founding Secretary of Water Stewardship Australia and founding Co-Chair of the global Alliance for Water Stewardship. Michael was the founding CEO of the Forest Stewardship Council in Australia; he has worked on projects for Fair Trade, the ISEAL Alliance and the International Responsible Mine Assurance program. He started in this field as Head of Marketing and Communication at the Forest Stewardship Council International Centre in Bonn. Prior to that he was the first Head of Corporate Citizenship at National Australia Bank, played a role in the merger of BHP and Billiton becoming Vice President Communication at BHP Billiton and worked as a Senior Advisor to the Premier of Victoria. He is a Fellow in the Department of Business Law and Taxation at Monash University, a Senior Associate at the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research, a Director of his own consulting company Spencer Consulting Group and recently formed Fernhills Ecological Management a company working in the developing area of eco-markets.
